Sir Alex Ferguson said that his brief as Manchester United manager was to "knock Liverpool off their f*****g perch". After over 2,000 games and 25 seasons, this year he finally succeeded. Following an endless supply of trophies, none meant more to United's global legion of fans than their 19th league title - simply because it finally put Liverpool in their place. It has taken Sir Alex 25 years to establish United as the leader of the championship pack. When Alan Hansen captained Liverpool to their most recent championship in 1990, the tally read 18-7 in Liverpool's favour and few would have given the Scot a prayer of capturing one championship, never mind 12. In "19", award-winning journalist Harry Harris looks back at all the title winning seasons and analyses each one from the viewpoint of a player who distinguished himself in that title year, building up to the record title and an in-depth analysis of the 2010-11 season and how United finally surpassed Liverpool. The book looks at the record through the eyes of those who took part in each of them, or who observed them from close quarters. "19" features exclusive interviews with Arthur Albiston, Alan Brazil, Steve Bruce, Garth Crooks, Gary Pallister, Paul Parker, Lee Sharpe, Gordon Taylor, Dave Whelan, Ray Wilkins.

The Rules of Association Football, 1863 - The First FA Rule Book (Hardcover): Bobby Charlton The Rules of Association Football, 1863 - The First FA Rule Book (Hardcover)

The Rule Book of The FA from 1863 is one of the most important books ever published - according to the writer and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg. Drawing on his recently published work, he explains in the Introduction why this book is one of the Twelve Books that Changed the World (Hodder & Stoughton, April 2006). Published to coincide with the World Cup in June 2006, this unassuming little book sets out the thirteen original rules as first written down by a group of frustrated former public school men at the Freemason's Tavern in Lincoln's Inn Fields. Every rule is accompanied by images from the hand-written manuscript preserved at The FA which records the first time that anyone put pen to paper and wrote down the fundamental tenets of football, such as the definition of a free kick or the length of a regulation football pitch. When these rules were originally published, it became possible for everyone, everywhere to play the same game, and it was this that enabled the 'beautiful game' to become the worldwide force it is today. As Sir Bobby Charlton explains in the foreword, the fourteen original rules embody the essence of the game, and instil admiration for the honesty, courage, and skill of its players. These rules have not simply made it possible to play football; they embody its spirit and heritage. The book is officially endorsed by The FA and supported by a publicity initiative backed by The FA.

The Fab Five who won a century of England caps epitomised their ages! Billy Wright sprinkled glamour on to a nation desperate to throw off post-war austerity. He married a Beverley Sister, the Spice Girls of his generation, and played at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where they made the first great experiment in European football, under floodlights. Bobby Moore represented the cool of the sixties. As happy mixing with movie stars as the general public, Moore was a man of the people, an East End lad made good. The image of him walking from the players exit at Upton Park and tossing a set of keys to a group of boys to unlock his Jaguar sums up his approach to life. Long after he had retired, Bobby Charlton was the single English name most recognised abroad and remains the top scorer for his country. He is still regarded as the finest player ever to pull on an England shirt and was pivotal to Alf Ramsey's plans for success in '66. Peter Shilton kept goal in two of English footballs pivotal moments, the defeat by Poland in 1973 and the World Cup semi-final with West Germany 17 years later. He summed up a generation of footballers who liked a pint and a bet but who would give everything for a shirt with Three Lions on it. He is regarded as perhaps England's greatest 'keeper. David Beckham represents the present celebrity age, completing the circle from the Billy Wright era. But it emphasised how the game had changed. Footballers never earned big money in Wrights era thanks to the maximum wage, whereas the multi millions put Beckham into a financial class of his own. The Fab Five could soon to be expanded to eight as Ashley Cole Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard approach their respective tons. Harry Harris tells the tale of each of the England centurions and with it the era he played in from the 1950s and England's emergence from post-war gloom, through the glory of '66 to the present day trials and tribulations of a national team seemingly never far from controversy.
